Following our Learning by Making philosophy, this four-week course immerses you in the art of chair making, guiding you to complete a fully upholstered hardwood chair of your own design. Through hands-on practice, you’ll develop advanced woodworking skills, including joinery, component shaping, and upholstery, building confidence and precision with both hand tools and workshop machinery.
Small class sizes ensure individual guidance at every stage, from technical drawing and templating to jig making, shaping, joinery, upholstery, and finishing. Working in a choice of hardwoods, you’ll gain practical knowledge of chair ergonomics, timber selection, and structural design, while refining surface quality, proportion, and professional workshop practices.
By the end of the course, you will have created a beautifully finished mid-century style chair that reflects your own style, while acquiring the skills, techniques, and confidence to continue exploring furniture making. This course welcomes beginners and those with prior experience, providing a supportive, well-paced, and inspiring learning environment.
